Understanding your skin type is the first step in selecting products that are right for you. There are four types of skin - normal, combination, dry and oily. Here are some of the basics to look for in determining your skin type.
Normal
An excellent example of normal skin is that of pre-pubescent children, though adults can have skin that is very close to normal.
- small to medium pored
- smooth, plump appearance
- balanced oil production
- even skin color & tone
Combination
Combination skin can be relatively trouble-free and, for the most part, is cared for like normal skin, though it does need spot treatment in the drier and oilier areas.
- susceptible to fine lines around eyes and mouth
- oiliness in T-Zone (forehead, cheeks & chin); dryness in cheek area
- medium pore size, possible uneven skin texture and tone
- occasional blemishes
Dry
Dry skin is brought on by under-active oil glands. It is aggravated by sun exposure, wind and heat.
- visible surface lines
- all over dryness; dehydrated
- fine pores
- dull texture
Oily
Oily skin is brought on by overactive oil glands. It is aggravated by hot and humid climates as well as by overstimulation through scrubbing or massage.
- minimal lines and wrinkles
- excessive oil secretions; all over shine and oil break-through
- large visible pores; uneven texture
- prone to blemishes
